Job Summary

The Vermont Judiciary is seeking a highly skilled Security and Safety Officer to join our team. As a key member of our security team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our courthouses and courtrooms, as well as safeguarding our judges, staff, litigants, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide security services for the judge, staff, and persons within the courtroom or courthouse, adhering to Judiciary use-of-force guidelines.
  • Foster a culture of employee awareness and encourage timely response to emergencies by facilitating Safety Committee efforts.
  • Coordinate employee risk management communication and training, including fire drills, slip & fall prevention, de-escalation, CPR/AED, first aid, Stop the Bleed, bomb threats procedure, Active Shooter/Active Threat Awareness, and other safety content.
  • Document daily shift activities via a computerized security log and security incident reporting system, and compile reports as needed.
  • Complete specialized security training and operate safety and security equipment or electronic devices.
  • Collaborate with other security personnel to carry out security arrangements, evacuation plans, and emergency situations.
  • Perform security checks of the facility, inspecting for lights, heat, air conditioning, and locks, as well as visitors, contraband, courtroom equipment, and public postings.
  • Check in persons scheduled for court hearings, explain roles and procedures, direct seating arrangements, and convey information to litigants after hearings.
  • Take temporary custody of prisoners, arrange transport if needed, and release them to an officer of the appropriate law enforcement agency.
  • Be responsible for the security and coordination of the jury while they are in the courtroom, deliberating, or sequestered.
  • Serve papers as directed by the judge or court clerks.
  • When not performing courtroom security or safety-related duties, perform court-related case processing tasks as directed using the Judiciary's case management system.
  • Assist law enforcement in weapon screening as needed.
Requirements
  • High School Graduation or GED and two (2) or more years of workforce experience in a responsible position.
  • Experience in security, law enforcement, safety, de-escalation situations, and/or emergency services preferred.
  • Experience in positions requiring attention to detail and customer service also preferred.
