Position Overview & Responsibilities

Overview:

The fire protection specialist may be tasked with performing various rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), hazard containment, and control duties at any time during their shift. Responsibilities include operating specialized vehicles and equipment for the purpose of conducting rescue operations, controlling and extinguishing fires on aircraft, structures, or vehicles under jurisdiction, and responding to specialty calls such as hazardous materials incidents and confined space rescues. The fire protection specialist is expected to perform firefighting and rescue duties during hazardous materials incidents, adhering to the level of training completed. The execution of these duties is paramount to fulfilling the department's mission of saving lives and property. The following duties are essential and must be executed properly to maintain the expected level of service:

  • 05% Engage in aerospace vehicle fire suppression. Operate ARFF and support vehicles, utilize hand and power tools, and perform ventilation, overhaul, and salvage operations.
  • 05% Combat structural fires. Operate structural firefighting vehicles, perform hose evolutions, pump operations, and manage building evacuations.
  • 05% Address wildland and miscellaneous fires. Control and extinguish fires in various environments.
  • 10% Conduct rescue operations. Operate vehicles, tools, and equipment, and provide EMS care as trained.
  • 05% Establish command and control at emergency scenes, coordinating firefighting and rescue efforts.
  • 15% Perform duties in the fire alarm communication center, dispatching equipment and maintaining logs.
  • 20% Conduct inspections and maintenance on vehicles, tools, and protective gear.
  • 15% Maintain fire station grounds and facilities, ensuring all equipment is operational.
  • 10% Engage in fire prevention, public education, and fire cause determination.
  • 02% Participate in Hazardous Materials Response Team duties.
  • 03% Adhere to safety practices according to established standards.

Qualifications

Education : High School Diploma or equivalent Licensing & Certification : National Certification as a Fire Fighter I and II Minimum Qualifications : Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), maintain designated training and certifications, meet physical requirements, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, pass a pre-employment physical including drug screening Preferred Qualifications : EMT, Airport Fire Fighter, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator Tender, Non-Commercial Class B driver's license Within 12 Months of Hire Requirement: EMT, Airport Fire Fighter, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator Tender Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements : Pass an annual medical examination to ensure physical ability to perform duties in accordance with established standards. Obtain required motor vehicle operator's license.
