This is a challenging opportunity to serve as a Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist within the External Affairs team at the Department of Homeland Security. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for leading a team of specialists in areas such as strategy and planning, media relations, creative and digital services, governmental and community affairs, internal communication, and executive communication.
Key Responsibilities- Lead a full-spectrum team of specialists in areas such as strategy and planning, media relations, creative and digital services, governmental and community affairs, internal communication, and executive communication.
- Provide strategic advice to regional leaders and enhance regional program delivery through traditional and social media relations, photography, videography, and creative services.
- Oversee executive communication products and manage staff and supervisors in a geographically diverse and dispersed region.
- Supervise two subordinate supervisors and a division of between 10-20 personnel during steady-state operations.
- Form disaster communication and engagement teams and may deploy as the external affairs officer or assistance external affairs officer on short notice for unknown periods of time, while maintaining all other division work.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must successfully pass a background investigation.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Government credit card.
To qualify for this position, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Experience may be obtained in the federal government, a state or local government, or private sector, and must demonstrate the following:
- Establishing and managing public information and external engagement strategies within an emergency management setting.
- Collaborating with the media.
- Collaborating with key stakeholders in at least 3 of the following areas: (a) State and local officials (b) Congressional offices; (c) Private Sector, and tribal and territorial government.
- Managing and supervising staff and overseeing program execution.
