Position: Senior Process Engineer

Location: Charlotte, NC

The Senior Process Engineer plays a crucial role in the design and optimization of processes within direct reduction facilities and other technological projects. This position involves providing guidance to process engineers and overseeing their work without direct supervisory authority. As a key technical leader, the Senior Process Engineer offers expertise across various initiatives and projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards and ISO regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to reach consensus on project assignments, focusing on solutions that benefit all stakeholders.
  • Design process flow diagrams (PFDs) and conduct mass and energy balance calculations for gases, liquids, and solids.
  • Prepare and manage the creation of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and associated equipment lists.
  • Develop specifications for equipment duties and manage process data for control valves and instrumentation.
  • Utilize proprietary software and create new calculation tools as needed.
  • Perform and document process calculations, establish standard methodologies, and validate calculations conducted by fellow engineers.
  • Act as the Lead Process Engineer on projects, following directives from project management or Chief Engineers as necessary.
  • Review documentation from vendors and other disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development of operational guidelines for plant processes.
  • Collaborate with the Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) department and other disciplines to review and create logic diagrams for new systems.
  • Assess existing and proposed process designs with an emphasis on safety considerations.
  • Participate in and potentially lead Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) reviews, contingent upon certification.
  • Assist in training clients during initial phases, support plant start-ups, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Support the preparation of proposals and estimate engineering man-hours for projects.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Autodesk and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong foundation in chemical engineering principles and process knowledge.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines and deliverables consistently.
  • Exceptional technical writing and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with chemical process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus).
  • Certification as a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) or HAZOP facilitator.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Experience in industrial plant settings.
  • Prior international travel experience.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in an industrial or technical setting, ideally related to the steel sector or with demonstrated leadership in projects.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10% to 25% travel, both domestic and international, depending on project needs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of desk work and computer usage.
  • Ability to navigate project sites, including climbing structures as necessary.
