POSITION: Staff Attorney, Family Violence Prevention Program

LOCATION: Hybrid role serving Northern Santa Barbara County

HOURS: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, exempt

OVERVIEW: The Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is seeking a dedicated full-time attorney for its Family Violence Prevention program. This role is crucial in providing legal assistance to individuals affected by intimate partner violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse, and human trafficking. The attorney will guide clients through the process of obtaining restraining orders and addressing other pertinent legal issues. Additionally, the attorney may offer support with immigration remedies for crime victims and consumer protection cases stemming from abuse. Community outreach and legal education on these critical issues will also be a significant part of this role. The position is partially funded by a grant from the US Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver legal representation to clients facing intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and related issues, including restraining orders and child custody matters.
  • Conduct client interviews, provide legal advice, and represent clients in court proceedings.
  • Manage case documentation and maintain accurate records in the case management system.
  • Engage in community education and outreach initiatives aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence and related topics.
  • Participate in program grant reporting and monitoring, and attend relevant taskforce meetings.
  • Adapt to a hybrid work schedule, balancing remote work with in-office responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be licensed to practice law in California and in good standing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with a focus on legal analysis and research.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals facing educational or language barriers.
  • Proficient in managing multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated advocacy skills and a commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and videoconferencing tools.
  • Understanding of domestic violence dynamics and its impact on individuals.
  • Valid California driver's license or reliable transportation for travel to meetings and outreach events.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience advocating for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking.
  • Background in family law or immigration law.
  • Experience working with low-income communities.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Prior experience with civil legal aid organizations or non-profit entities.
