POSITION: Staff Attorney, Family Violence Prevention Program
LOCATION: Santa Maria or Lompoc, CA (Hybrid)
HOURS: 37.5, full-time exempt
OVERVIEW: The Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is seeking a dedicated full-time attorney for its Family Violence Prevention program. This role focuses on providing legal assistance to individuals affected by intimate partner violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse, and human trafficking. The attorney will support clients in securing restraining orders and navigating other legal issues related to these matters. Additionally, the role may involve aiding clients with immigration remedies and consumer protection issues stemming from abuse. The attorney will also engage in community education and outreach regarding intimate partner violence and related topics. This position is partially funded by a grant from the US Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women. The program team includes one attorney based in Santa Barbara, serving clients in the southern region of the county. Depending on the applicant's experience, there may be opportunities for additional management or leadership roles.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The attorney will provide legal representation to clients facing intimate partner violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse, and human trafficking. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting client interviews and providing legal advice.
- Litigating cases related to domestic violence matters.
- Making court appearances and representing clients in trials.
- Maintaining and updating case management systems.
- Engaging in community education and outreach initiatives.
- Participating in program grant reporting and monitoring.
- Attending regional taskforce meetings.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Licensed to practice law in California and in good standing.
- Strong oral and written advocacy, legal analysis, and research skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals facing educational or language barriers.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
- Creative and passionate advocate with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and videoconferencing tools.
- Understanding of domestic violence dynamics.
- Valid California driver's license or reliable transportation for travel.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking.
- Background in family law or immigration law.
- Experience serving low-income communities.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
- Experience with civil legal aid organizations or non-profits.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $104,967, commensurate with experience. The benefits package includes generous personal leave, paid vacation, sick leave, health/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, and participation in a retirement plan with employer contributions.
