The role of the Peer Support Specialist at Rutland Regional Medical Center is to promote wellness, recovery, and support individuals in achieving their goals. They provide patient support by relating empathetically with individuals in the process of managing or recovering from mental illnesses or substance abuse. The Peer Support Specialist provides support during the admission process, attends meetings with healthcare providers as requested, helps patients identify their strengths, assists patients in averting crisis, and participates in debriefing patients following a restraint or crisis event. They also provide emotional support, give individuals hope, and demonstrate that recovery is possible. The Peer Support Specialist will be available to offer support services to patients and families in both the psychiatric inpatient and emergency room settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide empathetic support to patients and families in managing mental health or substance abuse issues
  • Assist patients in identifying their strengths and developing recovery plans
  • Participate in debriefing patients following a restraint or crisis event
  • Provide emotional support and give individuals hope
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) training
  • Experience coaching others with mental health or substance abuse issues in a therapeutic environment
  • Peer Specialist Certification preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Vermont's mental health system and knowledge of state, regional, and local resources

Compensation

  • Competitive salary range: $22.32 per hour
  • Evening differential: $4.25 per hour
  • Night differential: $8.00 per hour
  • Weekend differential: $4.75 per hour
