JOB SUMMARY: This role is crucial for maintaining security within the detention of inmates at the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility, ensuring adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Conduct regular inspections and upkeep of housing units and facilities to ensure optimal security.
  • Oversee security and provide direct supervision within inmate housing areas to maintain order and control; remain vigilant for potential disruptions, including escape attempts, altercations, theft, and other prohibited behaviors.
  • Keep accurate records of inmate counts and their locations within the facility; perform periodic checks throughout the shift.
  • Introduce inmates to housing units, ensuring they comprehend facility regulations.
  • Manage inmate schedules for exercise, meals, hygiene, educational classes, medical appointments, cleaning duties, laundry exchanges, mail deliveries, and visitations; document inmate activities and movements.
  • Conduct surveillance and searches to identify and confiscate contraband; inspect and inventory all cleaning supplies, tools, equipment, bedding, clothing, and medical items.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports for rule violations or unusual occurrences; provide testimony at disciplinary hearings and court as necessary.
  • Complete daily and weekly reports regarding jail operations, inmate activities, and correspondence with the courts; input data into the computer system.
  • Respond to emergencies, including fights, hostage situations, and riots; utilize appropriate restraint techniques when necessary.
  • Ensure security for medical personnel during medication distribution and health assessments.
  • Process incoming inmates, ensuring all admission paperwork is complete and accurate; conduct fingerprinting and photography of inmates.
  • Manage the inventory of inmate property and ensure proper hygiene and identification for inmates.
  • Transport inmates to various areas within the facility, maintaining security and enforcing departmental policies.
  • Monitor facility operations from the central control room using technical equipment such as cameras and door lock systems.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise inmates involved in food preparation, waste removal, facility cleaning, and laundering uniforms and linens.
  • Oversee meal distribution and ensure compliance with dietary requirements.
  • Ensure adequate delivery of meals, clothing, bedding, and linens to each inmate.
  • Conduct armed transport of inmates to courts, hospitals, and other facilities as required.
  • Supervise court-ordered community service participants, assigning them to appropriate tasks and maintaining records of their activities.
  • Coordinate transportation for inmates with scheduled court appearances.
  • Handle the delivery of legal documents and other necessary paperwork for court and administrative offices.
  • Prepare documentation for inmates committed to correctional facilities.
  • Compile weekly reports on inmate transfers and pending transfers.
  • May serve as a law enforcement instructor, developing training materials and assessing recruits' progress.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The role is primarily conducted within a controlled detention environment, requiring constant vigilance to prevent dangerous situations and ensure personal safety. Responsibilities may involve the occasional restraint of hostile detainees. Transportation of inmates is necessary, and work schedules may vary, including potential overtime.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to conduct thorough searches of inmates and property.

  • Ability to analyze emergency situations calmly and effectively.

  • Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
  • Computer proficiency for data entry and operation.
  • Familiarity with photography and fingerprinting equipment.
  • Ability to handle firearms as required by the department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to physically restrain violent inmates when necessary.
  • Ability to perform searches requiring bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Clear oral communication skills for various situations.
  • Digital dexterity for operating computers and conducting searches.
  • Visual acuity for monitoring inmate activity and identifying prohibited items.
  • Ability to climb stairs and respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Capability to drive vehicles as needed.
  • Ability to maintain focus and alertness during shifts.
  • Capacity to concentrate for extended periods.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of high school or GED; experience in law enforcement or corrections is preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Successful completion of background checks and evaluations is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old at the time of hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is necessary.
  • This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Regular attendance is crucial for this role.
  • No felony convictions are permitted.
  • Must obtain necessary certifications within the first year of employment.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and provide proof upon request.
