Job Title: Director, Media Relations

At METRO, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director, Media Relations to join our team. As a key member of our Communications department, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving relations and communications between METRO, the public, and the media.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide primary managerial direction and perform personnel administrative functions for direct report staff.
  • Act as a METRO spokesperson and be responsible for frontline contact for electronic, print media, and social media.
  • Manage media interviews for the Board and President & CEO, set up editorial board meetings, draft public statements, issue news releases, and oversee placement of various articles for local and national distribution.
  • Assist the EVP in budget development for the Media Relations division.
  • Supervise a team of Media Specialists and Social Media Specialists to develop and implement media strategy.
  • Generate and provide appropriate responses to media inquiries concerning METRO.
  • Provide professional expertise to consult and advise the Board and senior management in specific public relations activities.
  • Cultivate relationships with local, state, and national news and trade media.
  • Remain informed on all aspects of METRO to ensure correct information is distributed to the media and accurate story content is presented in METRO publications.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related degree.
  • Minimum eight (8) years' senior/professional experience in media relations, public relations, journalism, including three (3) years supervisor/management experience.
  • Knowledge of Houston/Harris County media.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communications (written/verbal) skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft office suite and electronic web-based communications tools.
