The VP of Safety and Compliance is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive safety strategy that aligns with the organization's objectives and regulatory requirements. This includes overseeing policy and procedure development or refinement, and all other related aspects of safety within the organization. The VP of Safety and Compliance collaborates with all levels of the organization to integrate safety into business operations, mitigate or remove risks, and ensures a safe working environment for all employees, contractors, vendors, and other key stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Strategy:
- Develops and implements a comprehensive safety strategy that aligns with the organization's objectives and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Risk Management Program (RMP).
- Promotes and improves behavior-based safety initiatives throughout the organization.
- Develops and manages the organization's safety budget in coordination with safety strategy and site-specific needs.
- Provides regular reports to senior leadership, board of directors, and key stakeholders on safety performance, compliance, and areas for improvement.
Safety Leadership:
- Serves as the champion and subject matter expert for Safety within the organization. Drives a culture of safety throughout the organization.
- Provides supervision and development to direct reports including hiring, performance management, and compensation.
- Develops and/or implements safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable regulations or company goals, whichever is greater.
- Oversees safety training and compliance for the organization; partners with site leadership to ensure adherence to standards and requirements.
- Monitors and analyzes safety data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Ensures adequate safety representation is on-site for all planned outages, major projects, and well drilling/workover activities.
- Develops and oversees the contractor safety management program including the usage of evaluation tools like ISNetworld.
- Works closely with operations, resource management, human resources, and legal to ensure safety is integrated into all business functions.
Safety Execution:
- Develops and reviews safety protocols for well-field related activities (e.g., drilling, push-pulls, testing, clean-outs, etc.).
- Manages safety incidents and investigations; ensures accurate reporting, root cause analysis, and implementation of preventative measures.
- Leads safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and risks.
- Interfaces with federal, state, and local regulators during audits, reviews, and/or to proactively ensure compliance with requirements.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, or related industry field or equivalent education and work experience.
- Ten or more years of Health & Safety experience as a primary responsibility. Experience in Power Plant Operations, Geothermal Operations, Oil & Gas/Refinery, Mining, or related industries preferred.
- Five or more years of experience leading the Safety function within an organization, including supervision of others, policy development, and report development, preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in using sound judgement and making decisions based on available data, influencing others, and driving change management.
- Strong working knowledge of Federal OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
- One or more Active Board of Certified Safety Professional Certification, e.g. GSP, ASP, OHST, STS, CSP, or equivalent preferred.
- Knowledge of drilling operations and rig-related equipment preferred.
- Familiarity with activities such as coil tubing, wireline, cementing, well servicing, and fishing is preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Ability to complete domestic travel (flights or driving) to remote locations in the Western United States, up to 40%, often with short notice.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk moderate distances, twist, stoop/bend, squat, kneel, crawl, reach, push, pull, and climb stairs or ladders.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Able to tolerate remote environments, indoor/outdoor work, wildlife, possible dust, dirt, and wind, including any weather typical for all seasons in southern CA, NV, and UT.
- Ability to don all forms of required Personal Protective Equipment and work at heights of up to 60'.
Location:
- On-site position based in Salt Lake City, Utah or Reno, Nevada.
- Relocation support available.
