Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director, this role involves performing essential administrative tasks and professional duties related to the planning and execution of special events, festivals, and various recreational programs. The position requires independent decision-making in determining work methods after receiving both written and verbal instructions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop, recommend, and manage the department's special events and festival initiatives, along with other recreational programs as assigned.

2. Establish both short-term and long-term objectives and strategies for programs and activities that align with departmental goals.

3. Identify and pursue new funding opportunities through innovative programs, sponsorships, and grant applications.

4. Conduct research on public and private grant sources to pinpoint potential funding avenues and assist staff in grant writing.

5. Coordinate projects and events on an interdepartmental and community-wide scale.

6. Evaluate program effectiveness and suggest improvements.

7. Manage participant registrations, collect fees, and issue receipts.

8. Handle reservations and perform routine clerical tasks.

9. Respond to public inquiries regarding programs, services, and facilities.

10. Assist in preparing the annual budget for assigned programs and events.

11. Maintain records and prepare activity reports.

12. Ensure adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, and policies; address any complaints or issues as necessary.

13. Attend events and programs as required, which may include evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or university with a focus on leisure/recreation services or physical education, along with two years of experience in recreation or tourism; experience in public sector preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of recreation programming and event coordination; familiarity with office practices; proficient in grant research and writing; knowledge of sports regulations and recreation software applications; and understanding of relevant laws and policies affecting the role.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, officials, vendors, and the public; proficient in data entry and communication; skilled in using modern office equipment and software, including Microsoft Office Suite; capable of multitasking and producing clear, concise correspondence.

Ability to coordinate and schedule seasonal staff and volunteers; work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; prepare reports; identify issues, gather data, and draw valid conclusions.

Licenses and Certifications
Valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent.
