OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION: The Community Engagement Specialist will act as a bridge between families, educational institutions, and community resources, facilitating improved communication among all parties involved in the educational process.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Connecting Families with Resources
- Provide details about available Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) events and resources, including educational courses and activities.
- Assist families in addressing social needs by sharing information about relevant community resources.
- Guide parents in accessing district programs and services.
- Promote district and school events, encouraging family participation.
B. Supporting Student Achievement
- Help families comprehend district/school policies and procedures, such as attendance, homework expectations, and uniform guidelines.
- Facilitate opportunities for parents and teachers to meet and discuss students' academic progress (e.g., Parent-Teacher Conferences).
- Provide assistance to parents regarding general inquiries and basic information related to special education and academic programs.
- Support families in developing parenting skills that foster their children's success.
- Collaborate with educators to create learning materials for home visits.
C. Fostering Relationships with Families
- Welcome families, introducing them to the school community.
- Identify potential members for the Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) and School Centered Decision Making (SCDM) and encourage their involvement.
- Develop opportunities for families and educators to connect personally.
- Engage in school events such as open houses and coffee hours to strengthen relationships with parents.
- Serve as a mediator between families and school staff when challenges arise or when cultural differences present barriers.
D. Evaluating Family Needs
- Document family needs using tracking tools.
- Utilize observations and various techniques to identify specific family needs and monitor their progress.
- Create a support plan tailored to the families' requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborate with parents, educators, counselors, and attendance officers to enhance communication between home and school.
- Participate in workshops aimed at building parent engagement and capacity.
- Work alongside parent and community organizations to empower families.
- Collaborate with the PACE Center Team and community groups to support district initiatives.
- Assist school personnel in identifying potential translation services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferred: Associate's Degree from an accredited institution or a minimum of two years of experience in family services or a related field.
- Ability to communicate effectively with families in a supportive and friendly manner.
- Capability to function as an effective team member in a diverse and multicultural educational environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and basic technology skills.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
- Bilingual skills are highly desirable.
