The Infection Control Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting the Director of Infection Control and is a vital member of the healthcare team, both in inpatient and outpatient settings.
This position aids in the organization, oversight, and assessment of the quality and effectiveness of the Infection Control Program.
Responsibilities include monitoring for healthcare-associated infections, outbreaks, and significant epidemiological infections using established criteria and definitions.
The Coordinator establishes metrics, identifies trends, and investigates clusters of healthcare-associated infections or safety incidents among patients and staff, implementing control measures in collaboration with the Director of Infection Control and the hospital's Infectious Disease Physician.
This role serves as an educational resource for all staff regarding infection prevention and control matters.
Key Responsibilities:
• Collaborates in executing a comprehensive plan to prevent healthcare-associated infections and communicable disease exposure among visitors and staff.
• Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of the program and makes necessary adjustments.
• Implements infection control strategies in line with guidelines from CDC, OSHA, CMS, DNV, and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.
• Analyzes routine surveillance data organization-wide; presents findings to relevant committees and clinical groups; identifies health issues impacting patient care.
• Works with the Employee Health Program to monitor staff exposures to blood and body fluids, needle stick injuries, communicable diseases, and safety concerns.
• Oversees and participates in the surveillance of hospital-acquired infections and those in outpatient settings, ensuring adherence to reporting and record-keeping systems.
• Collaborates with various departments to screen and admit patients suspected of having infectious diseases.
• Assists in the development and delivery of educational programs related to infection prevention and control, equipping staff with knowledge to meet professional and regulatory standards.
• Investigates significant healthcare-associated infections, including Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs), mechanical ventilator-associated events (VAE), Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), and high-risk Surgical Site Infections (SSI).
• Monitors and analyzes the incidence of infections and the emergence of highly pathogenic communicable diseases.
• Supports system-wide measures to prevent healthcare-associated transmission.
• Manages committees or task forces focused on infection prevention projects, maintaining charters, objectives, work plans, and evaluation metrics.
• Analyzes data and implements control measures for identified infection clusters exceeding expected thresholds.
• Prepares departments for accreditation surveys related to infection control standards and leads surveyors in the absence of the Director.
• Ensures compliance with infection control policies and procedures, collaborating with healthcare teams to update guidelines based on evidence-based practices.
• Conducts literature reviews and prepares presentation materials as needed.
• Serves as a consultant on infection control issues across all services.
• Assists in resolving infection control challenges as directed by the Director.
• Engages in patient observation and assessment, working with healthcare providers to address specific infection prevention needs.
• Reviews isolation practices, sterilization procedures, and sanitation techniques within departments, contributing to policy formulation.
• Conducts inspections of food preparation and storage areas to ensure safe practices.
• Develops infection control risk assessments for construction and renovation projects.
• Collaborates with Environmental Services to ensure cleanliness across all areas in accordance with national standards.
• Prepares reports on infection data and may communicate findings to the Hospital Infectious Disease physician and relevant committees.
• Participates in the development of an annual Quality Improvement Plan for Infection Control.
• Collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies to report trends and communicable disease issues.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive matters and stays updated in the field of Infection Control.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in nursing, epidemiology, microbiology, public health, or a related field required.
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of experience in an acute care hospital setting.
- At least three years of relevant experience in infection control or prevention.
- Experience with accreditation survey processes preferred.
- Familiarity with Quality or LEAN methodologies preferred.
- Experience in adult education is advantageous.
- Knowledge of disinfection and sterilization techniques is essential.
- Understanding of supervisory principles and practices.
- Comprehensive knowledge of infection control regulations and procedures is preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is required.
