California, United States Astranis Full time

Astranis is dedicated to closing the digital gap by connecting the billions of individuals worldwide who currently lack internet access. We are achieving this by developing the next generation of compact, cost-efficient spacecraft to bring connectivity to the globe.

Our team has successfully launched two satellites into orbit, secured ten commercial agreements totaling over $1 billion in revenue, raised more than $500 million from leading global investors, and assembled a workforce of over 300 exceptional engineers. We operate from our renowned San Francisco office, a historic site that once contributed to shipbuilding during the World Wars.

Our satellites, which function from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh a mere 400 kg and employ a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite has the capacity to connect over two million individuals, and we are eager to witness the positive impact we will soon have in regions such as the Philippines, Peru, and Mexico.

Supported by significant funding and a passionate, collaborative team, we provide a fulfilling work environment where you will learn and make a meaningful impact, regardless of your career stage.

Production Quality Engineer

In the role of Production Quality Engineer, you will face the unique challenge of establishing a quality management system and developing robust processes for its implementation. As Astranis expands its satellite production, we must create new business processes, systems, and controls to guarantee that our hardware meets the highest standards of quality and reliability. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in quality engineering for high-reliability products, demonstrate self-motivation and autonomy, and have a proven history of resolving complex issues in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and execute quality functions, including nonconformance resolution, first article inspection, root cause analysis, corrective actions, containment strategies, and statistical process control.
  • Draft and maintain quality management system (QMS) documentation to regulate our design, manufacturing, and testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with design engineering teams to establish standards for part drawings, including key characteristic identification, dimensioning, GD&T, and first article inspection plans.
  • Develop a framework for process validation to qualify new manufacturing processes and collaborate with production engineering teams for implementation.
  • Create metrics and tools to evaluate the success of products and processes in production, focusing on product yield and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Establish a system for tracking calibrated metrology within the manufacturing facility.
  • Conduct regular build quality assessments to ensure that design intent is realized and effectively communicated.
  • Define electrostatic discharge (ESD) and cleanliness standards and control measures within the production environment.
  • Assist production and engineering leadership in identifying opportunities for risk mitigation and simplifying designs and processes to enhance manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a manufacturing or quality engineering capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with implementing QMS standards such as AS9100 and ISO9001.
  • Hands-on experience in qualifying and maintaining manufacturing processes for electronic and/or mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience in reviewing design documentation and executing first-article inspection plans.
  • Strong skills in SQL and Python, with a demonstrated ability to manage large datasets and create useful tools, dashboards, and reports.
  • Proven application of process validation and control methods such as PFMEA, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Ability to utilize common CAD, PLM, and ERP systems such as Solidworks, Altium, and Arena.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce executive-level reports and presentations that effectively convey information about large datasets.

Compensation and Benefits

All positions come with a compensation package that includes equity and comprehensive benefits.

Base pay is one component of Astranis's total rewards package, which may also include equity in the form of incentive stock options, high-quality company-subsidized healthcare, disability and life insurance benefits, flexible PTO, 401(K) retirement plans, and complimentary on-site meals.

Astranis's pay ranges are informed by professional-grade salary surveys and compensation data sources. The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will be influenced by various factors, including experience, credentials, educational attainment, skill level requirements, and the level and scope of the position.

Base Salary Range

$110,000 - $130,000 USD

U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residency, or Refugee/Asylee Status Required

To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents of the United States, or other protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
