Position Overview
The Autonomous Robotics and Control Group at Caltech is on the lookout for a Research Engineer to assist in the advancement of innovative autonomous algorithms tailored for applications on Earth and in space. Our team not only theorizes but also rigorously tests these concepts in practical scenarios. From pioneering hybrid systems to implementing AI and machine learning controls, we engage in diverse research that supports a wide array of applications.
We seek a candidate who can aid in the design, integration, and evaluation of our innovative ideas. Responsibilities may include developing algorithms for perception, motion planning, and control, as well as designing both electrical and mechanical systems, programming simulations, and conducting documentation and trade studies.
This role is ideal for a versatile individual with a broad knowledge base across various disciplines. It offers a unique opportunity to expand your expertise through exposure to multiple projects and fields, both practically and theoretically.
Key Responsibilities
Facilitate robotics research in both laboratory and field settings, which includes design and manufacturing (3D modeling, rapid prototyping, etc.), software development (hardware drivers, motion planning, tracking control), and testing (code deployment on physical hardware, robot operation). Create simulations for wheeled vehicles utilizing system identification methods based on real-world data to enhance accuracy. Simulations must be adaptable to various environmental conditions and operate within CI/CD frameworks. Produce documentation and conduct trade studies on new designs to inform future research directions within the lab.Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Engineering (or a related field), with proficiency in coding (C++ or Python), controls, machine learning/AI, space systems, or robotics. Ability to transition into new areas and a strong willingness to acquire new skills to support a variety of exciting projects.Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience in robotics, signal processing, and software development. Familiarity with software tools, including ROS, Linux, C++, and Python.Application Requirements
ResumeCompensation Range
$60,000 to $82,500 annually. The salary for the selected candidate will be determined based on various factors, including internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
