Position Overview
The IPAC division at Caltech is seeking a Systems Engineering Project Lead to become an integral part of the team at the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). This position entails collaborating with astronomers and data specialists globally to facilitate access to and exploration of IRSA's vast astronomical data repositories.
IPAC is dedicated to advancing scientific exploration by providing operational support, user assistance, data management, and scientific guidance for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial observatories. IRSA acts as the steward of scientific datasets from NASA's Astrophysics missions, enabling pioneering research utilizing data from these missions and beyond. The IRSA team oversees extensive imaging datasets, comprehensive databases, and a variety of tools for data retrieval, visualization, and analysis derived from state-of-the-art astronomical facilities. As we gear up to support forthcoming astrophysics missions, we are in search of individuals enthusiastic about contributing to this dynamic field.
Key Responsibilities
As a Systems Engineering Project Lead and Deputy Task Manager at IRSA, your role will involve collaboration with IRSA's scientific and task leadership on a range of initiatives, including:
- Facilitating task management activities, encompassing scheduling, progress monitoring, peer evaluations, and performance reporting.
- Interacting with IRSA's clientele, including both space- and ground-based astronomical observatories, to ascertain their requirements.
- Partnering with IRSA leadership to formulate strategies based on client needs and resource availability.
- Establishing requirements and generating interface control documentation.
- Supervising the configuration, management, and oversight of IRSA services, software repositories, documentation, and datasets.
- Collaborating with archive systems engineers to oversee infrastructure management, both on-site and in cloud environments.
