Job Title: Comparative Medicine Technician

Are you passionate about advancing collaborative biomedical science to transform biology and medicine through animal research?

We're seeking talented professionals to join our Comparative Med Tech team at the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard.

As a Comparative Medicine Technician, you will be responsible for preventative health monitoring, veterinary care, and animal husbandry for multiple species.

You will complete all aspects of vivarium technical operations according to standard operating procedures, including providing clean sanitized nesting material, fresh food, water, and environmental enrichment on a scheduled and as needed basis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor animal health and well-being
  • Evaluate animal health, report abnormal conditions, and provide clinical treatments as directed by veterinarian, program management, or designee
  • Document, organize, and maintain timely records in the laboratory animal resource software system
  • Provide technical services and support to research staff
  • Provide and monitor enrichment enhancements
  • Provide fresh feed, water, and bedding material as scheduled and as needed
  • Maintain breeding, identification, and gestational databases
  • Operate bio-safety cabinets, animal transfer stations, individually ventilated rack systems, and regulated and calibrated veterinary equipment
  • Assist with preparing autoclaved caging material for animal colonies according to standard operating procedures
  • Occasionally operate mechanical cage wash units, bulk steam sterilizers, decontamination equipment, and material-transfer vacuum systems according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED and 0-4 years employed in a laboratory animal husbandry position
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with research staff and peers
  • Weekend and holiday work required
  • May require working a shifted weekly schedule that routinely includes weekend days
  • AALAS certification preferred
  • Must function well independently and as a team-member
  • This position qualifies as an essential employee
  • Employment is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of an occupational health assessment for working with laboratory animals
  • Must have the ability to lift 50lbs. and push/pull 300lbs
