Key Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities encompass (but are not limited to):
  • Organizing and dismantling designated workstations with appropriate supplies and food items;
  • Portioning food items into standard serving sizes utilizing the correct utensils and specified dishware;
  • Selecting and arranging appropriate items on patient trays;
  • Determining food items to serve for the most prevalent dietary requirements;
  • Identifying discrepancies between prescribed diets and food items designated by the menu;
  • Preparing dining areas for service, placing food and beverages on tables, and replenishing items as necessary;
  • Delivering meal trays to patients' bedsides and reporting feedback and concerns to the supervisor or dietitian;
  • Assisting cooks in the food preparation area, including weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes;
  • Preparing fresh fruits, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, and simple cold desserts;
  • Reading and interpreting regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets, or patient selections;
  • Conducting thorough cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas;
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Friday - Tuesday, 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM

Physical Requirements: Physical effort and working conditions involve kitchen environments where steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment may create uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The role requires light to moderate physical exertion and may involve heavy tasks, such as scrubbing large cooking utensils and maneuvering heavy carts and trucks for unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. Continuous standing and walking, along with frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending, are necessary. Regularly lifting or moving objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lifting or moving objects over 40 pounds with assistance is expected.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not mandated, but evidence of training or experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position is necessary. Applicants will be evaluated based on the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Qualifications will first be assessed against the prescribed screen-out element. Applicants who meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement will be considered for further evaluation.

Experience includes: Performing food preparation duties in a healthcare facility, hotel, college cafeteria, military base, or similar quantity food service institution; serving correct portion sizes; setting up stations on a tray line; delivering and collecting trays; cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment required in quantity food preparation and service; knowledge of regular and modified diets; reading and understanding diet cards, food terminology, measurements, and serving information in standardized recipes for all menus.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited based on time spent in relevant activities.

There is no educational substitution for this series/grade.
