Job Summary:

The Research Assistant I position at Houston Methodist is responsible for providing technical research support in performing research experiments. This role involves working in a laboratory or office environment, under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), to assist in the organization, tabulation, and analysis of data. The successful candidate will maintain records of data collected and contribute to the development of new laboratory procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in research planning meetings and provide meaningful contributions to drive decision-making and identify next steps.
  • Demonstrate teamwork by responding positively to requests for assistance to achieve optimal department results.
  • Use peer-to-peer accountability to improve department scores for turnover, retention, and employee engagement.
  • Perform technical laboratory research, including biological assays, quantitative, and qualitative analyses.
  • Accurately follow technical instructions to set up and conduct experiments.
  • Provide updates on assigned experiments and research outcomes.
  • Maintain records of all tests performed and data collected.
  • Ensure safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Identify opportunities for corrective action and process improvement, providing recommendations to meet department and hospital targets for quality and safety.
  • Use resources efficiently and evaluate inventory levels.
  • Assist department management in product evaluations and utilization of existing products.
  • Participate in the development or establishment of new laboratory procedures.
  • Train in new techniques as they emerge.
  • Seek opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development as a researcher.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in a related field.
  • No prior work experience required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Works well in a team environment, as well as independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize frequently, quickly shift tasks, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
