NASA Johnson Space Center Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
The Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at NASA's Johnson Space Center, in collaboration with the Universities Space Research Association's Lunar and Planetary Institute, is excited to announce an opportunity for a distinguished postdoctoral fellowship. This fellowship is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. Gordon A. McKay, a prominent figure in the field of planetary igneous petrology and geochemistry.
This fellowship aims to foster and recognize outstanding research contributions from scientists who have recently completed their doctoral studies. It is designed to support the professional growth of emerging scientists engaged in astromaterials research, focusing on the origins, compositions, structures, and evolutionary processes of various celestial bodies within our Solar System, including planets, moons, meteorites, asteroids, comets, and cosmic dust.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct pioneering research in lunar and planetary sciences.
- Publish findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with a target of at least one publication in the first year, ideally as the lead or senior author, and two or more publications annually thereafter.
- Present research outcomes at internationally recognized conferences and workshops, utilizing both oral presentations and poster formats.
- Seek external funding for research initiatives from various granting agencies, starting in the second year, which may include partial salary support.
- Mentor undergraduate interns and assist in the guidance of graduate students.
- Engage in public outreach efforts to communicate scientific findings to the broader community and support institutional objectives.
- Prepare comprehensive reports detailing scientific activities for annual evaluations and internal assessments.
- Contribute to specialized workshops and conferences organized by the Lunar and Planetary Institute.
- Manage budgets for grants or awards as Principal Investigator or co-investigator, ensuring adherence to financial guidelines and providing necessary reviews and reports.
Applicants should possess (or be close to obtaining) a Ph.D. in planetary science, geoscience, or a related field within space sciences, along with a strong record of publications. Prior research experience in planetary science, either during or following the completion of the Ph.D., is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills are also preferred. Candidates must be able to pass a thorough government background investigation due to security protocols.
This fellowship offers a competitive salary along with research and travel funding. The initial term of the fellowship is two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year.
The Universities Space Research Association is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment and is an Equal Opportunity Employer, welcoming applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
