Position Overview: The role of a Marine Fisheries Research Scientist involves collaboration with the Division of Marine Fisheries Management, specifically within the Artificial Reefs Sub-section. The selected individual will engage in managing grants and contracts related to the construction and monitoring of artificial reefs in both state and federal waters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with fellow Biological Scientists and a Biological Administrator to oversee artificial reef projects.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret physical and biological data to assess artificial reef habitats.
  • Conduct human use monitoring surveys and visual fish census using SCUBA and underwater photography.
  • Assist in the mobilization and demobilization of field operations.
  • Support statistical analyses of project data and the creation of summary tables and graphics.
  • Prepare technical reports, including figures, tables, and maps.
  • Interact with agency personnel, stakeholders, and the public to foster effective communication.

Collaboration and Compliance:

  • Manage artificial reef construction and monitoring contracts with local coastal governments.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with agency managers, regulatory staff, and stakeholders.
  • Participate in the Division's Dive Team to evaluate previously deployed artificial reef projects.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the artificial reef deployment database.

Technical Skills:

  • Operate and maintain project sampling platforms, including vehicles and boats.
  • Utilize side scan sonar, magnetometer, ROV, and other remote sensing equipment.
  • Process vendor invoices and ensure timely payment for services rendered.

Public Engagement:

  • Develop visual presentations and represent the agency at public meetings.
  • Assist constituents with inquiries related to fish and wildlife conservation.
  • Promote public support for agency initiatives through positive engagement.

Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in biological sciences is required, with a preference for marine sciences. SCUBA certification is mandatory.
