Position Summary:

The surgical services technician plays a vital role in the healthcare team, contributing to the surgical care provided to patients. Working under the guidance of a surgeon, these professionals ensure the safe and efficient execution of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring all equipment is functional, and facilitating procedures that prioritize patient safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Wear appropriate operating room attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Prepare and verify all necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Conduct the surgical scrub and don the gown and gloves.
  • Organize the sterile back table and Mayo stand with required instruments, supplies, and medications.
  • Perform initial counts of instruments, sharps, and sponges in collaboration with the circulator.
  • Assist team members with gowning and gloving processes.
  • Support the draping of the patient and establish a sterile field.
  • Engage in patient and surgical site verification during the time-out procedure.
  • Secure all tubing, cords, and sterile accessories.
  • Anticipate and prepare additional instruments and supplies needed during the procedure.
  • Assist the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies as required.
  • Measure and provide medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions during surgery.
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Manage sponging or suctioning of the operative site.
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeding sites.
  • Cut suture material as instructed by the surgeon.
  • Coordinate camera operations or change robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic procedures as directed.
  • Uphold the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Conduct additional counts as necessary.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
  • Handle and pass off specimens as appropriate.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assist in the terminal cleaning of the operating room.
  • Help prepare the operating room for subsequent patients.
  • Participate in debriefing sessions and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of an operating room technician program or military operating room training, along with a minimum of 2 years of diverse operating room scrubbing experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • National Board Certification is preferred.
  • Preferred experience of 2-3 years in an operating room setting.
