POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fire Alarm Apprentice is responsible for supporting the Fire Alarm Superintendent in the setup and installation of fire alarm systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Fire Alarm Superintendent or project leader with the installation of conduits, low voltage wiring, control panels, and various fire alarm apparatus.
  • Maintain tools in a ready and operational state at the job site.
  • Help with the organization and cleanliness of the job site, tools, and equipment.
  • Transport equipment, including ladders, tools, and replacement parts, from the vehicle or storage area to the designated location.
  • Acquire and develop a practical understanding of fire alarm and special hazards installation through various instructional methods.
  • Study NFPA 72 and NEC 70 to work towards obtaining NICET Certification and the necessary skills for advancement to a Fire Alarm Technician.
  • Comprehend and adhere to SFS's Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies, and procedures. Engage in weekly Toolbox talks and ensure knowledge of all relevant safety documentation on each project.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications listed below are representative of the elements required to perform the job successfully; however, an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience may also be acceptable.

Education and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • No prior experience in the Fire Life Safety Industry, specifically in Fire Alarm, is required.
  • 1+ years of professional computer skills.
  • A willingness and capability to learn the necessary skills for promotion to a Fire Alarm & Security Technician.
  • Must comply with SFS's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may include customer-specific criteria based on contractual agreements.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and business objectives.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking abilities.
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to work with employees at all levels.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Communication Skills:

  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with colleagues and clients.

Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must comply with SFS's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may include customer-specific criteria based on contractual agreements.
  • Willingness to travel locally up to 90% of the time.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders, and stairs, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs, reach above and below shoulders, stand, and walk for extended periods. The employee must be able to see in color, at close and far distances, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjust focus. Occasionally, the employee may be required to balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.

Work Environment:

Employees will regularly work outdoors and may be exposed to varying temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise. Occasionally, employees may work indoors in an office setting, both independently and collaboratively. Employees must consistently wear all required personal protective equipment as dictated by company safety policies while on job sites.
