POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fire Alarm Apprentice plays a crucial role in supporting the Fire Alarm Superintendent with the setup and installation of fire alarm systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Fire Alarm Superintendent or project leader in the installation of conduits, low voltage wiring, control panels, and various fire alarm apparatus.
  • Maintain tools in a ready and functional state at the job site.
  • Help in the upkeep of the job site, tools, and equipment.
  • Transport equipment, including ladders, tools, and replacement parts from the vehicle or storage area to the designated location.
  • Acquire and develop a working knowledge of fire alarm and special hazards installation through various learning methods.
  • Study NFPA 72 and NEC 70 to prepare for NICET Certification and to gain the necessary skills for advancement to a Fire Alarm Technician.
  • Adhere to SFS's Safety program, SDS book, and Hazardous Communication program, while participating in weekly Toolbox talks. Ensure familiarity with all relevant safety documentation on each project.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications outlined below represent the essential elements required to successfully perform this role. However, an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience may also fulfill the job requirements.

Education and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • No prior experience in the Fire Life Safety Industry, specifically in Fire Alarm, is required.
  • At least one year of professional computer skills is necessary.
  • A strong desire and capability to learn the necessary skills for advancement to a Fire Alarm & Security Technician.
  • Compliance with SFS's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements is mandatory.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is essential.

Communication Skills:

  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with both employees and clients.

Additional Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Willingness to travel locally up to 90% of the time.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to bend, climb ladders, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs, reach above and below shoulder height, and stand or walk for extended periods. The employee must have the ability to see in color, at varying distances, and have depth perception.

Work Environment:

Employees will often work outdoors and may be exposed to varying temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise. Occasionally, work may be performed indoors in an office setting, either independently or in collaboration with others. Adherence to safety policies and the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory while on-site.
