Job Summary

The City of Oak Park is seeking a highly skilled Public Service Worker I to join our team. As a key member of our Department of Public Works, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, including loaders, trucks, and backhoes. Your duties will also include performing manual labor in functions such as water and sewer maintenance, parks and forestry, and street repair.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a range of power tools, including mowers, blowers, chainsaws, chippers, and trimmers.
  • Operate large commercial equipment, including dump trucks, graders, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Perform ice and snow control activities, including shoveling and salting.
  • Perform tree pruning and removal.
  • Repair, install, and maintain underground sewers, lift stations, and their appurtenances.
  • Lawn and landscape maintenance, including cutting and edging grass, planting, watering, and caring for trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Perform repair and maintenance of pump stations, water meters, hydrants, and curb stop boxes.
  • Repair and maintain streets and sidewalks, including concrete and asphalt removal and replacement, street signs, and markings.
  • Maintain accurate work records, time sheets, and other forms of data.
Requirements
  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 90-pound loads.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, grease, fuel, chemicals, and lubricants.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, climb trees, go into underground vaults and pits with restricted movement.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of use of equipment and tools used in Public Works practices.
  • Must live and maintain residency no more than 25 minutes from the City of Oak Park.
  • May be required to obtain Michigan license for pesticide application.
  • May be required to train and become proficient in small engine and power tool repair and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior Public Works experience.
  • Valid CDL with Part B (Air Brakes & Tanker Endorsement).
Working Conditions

The Public Service Worker I must be available for all dates of assignment and must be able to work overtime when called in to work. Additionally, the Public Service Worker I must live no more than 25 minutes from the City of Oak Park.

Salary Range

This is a full-time, TPOAM Bargaining Unit position with an hourly rate of $23.3648 - $28.2292, with benefits.
