Position Overview:
The City of Oak Park is actively seeking qualified candidates for the role of Public Safety Officer I. This position plays a crucial role in safeguarding life and property through the enforcement of local laws and regulations, as well as engaging in essential firefighting duties.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Uphold and enforce the laws and ordinances of the City of Oak Park and the State of Michigan.
  • Operate public safety vehicles and equipment in designated areas.
  • Manage traffic flow and ensure public safety on roadways.
  • Issue violation citations and conduct searches and arrests as necessary.
  • Respond to requests for assistance and address complaints from the public.
  • Investigate accidents, provide first aid, and coordinate transportation for injured individuals.
  • Act as a school crossing guard when required.
  • Transport detainees to judicial facilities.
  • Provide testimony in court proceedings.
  • Utilize photographic equipment for documentation purposes.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports as mandated.
  • Conduct investigations into complaints and legal violations.
  • Interview suspects, witnesses, and complainants to gather pertinent information.
  • Preserve evidence at crime scenes and perform follow-up investigations.
  • Respond to fire alarms, manage firefighting equipment, and execute firefighting techniques.
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections and maintain firefighting apparatus.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Valid Michigan Operator's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Four years of active-duty military service or two years as a Certified Police Officer, Certified Firefighter I & II, or Certified Corrections Officer.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification as a Michigan Police Officer, Firefighter I & II, Medical First Responder, or a combination of these certifications is highly desirable.


Working Conditions:

Candidates must be prepared to undergo a comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation, and physical and drug screening prior to employment.

The Public Safety Officer I position requires physical capability to perform essential functions, including the ability to engage in strenuous activities and operate in various environmental conditions.
