Job Summary

The Ellison Institute of Technology is seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer to join our Convergent Systems Research Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and validating automated instrumentation and prototypes, as well as associated data analysis processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop modular, reusable test and automation software in Python and similar languages for manufacturing and engineering design verification
  • Write automation software to control hardware, test equipment, instrumentation, and production documentation systems
  • Develop software that allows for test execution across multiple environments: hardware-in-the-loop (HITL, HIL) and virtualized hardware simulations
  • Develop, design, and construct custom automation solutions to biomedical engineering challenges using a combination of embedded electronics, photonics, and innovative hardware
  • Prepare documentation following Good Laboratory Practices, including supporting versioning and preparing detailed technical drawings, and write SOPs for operation
  • Define and implement project plans and manage milestones to assure reliable systems are delivered
  • Invent tools that enable more frequent and reliable software deployment, test execution, and data analysis as part of a continuous integration and release system
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities and develop innovative solutions
  • Conduct root cause analysis to troubleshoot and resolve automation issues
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field of engineering or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in automation engineering or a related field
  • Strong project management and technical communication skills
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and software in hands-on testing environments
  • Experience with control feedback loop design and implementation
  • Experience with numerical analysis techniques and signal processing in multiple domains
  • Extensive knowledge with a range of digital and analog interfaces including GPIB, USB, VISA, TCP/IP, VLAN, CAN bus, SPI, I2C, Modbus, analog-to-digital conversion
  • Experience troubleshooting interactions between software and hardware such as network devices and lab instrumentation
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, AutoCAD, control system logic (PID, PLC)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a field of engineering or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in automation engineering or a related field
  • Experience building sensor networks from orthogonal sensor elements
  • Experience with LabVIEW software
  • Experience with configuration management and version control software
  • Experience with finite element models and/or technical schematics (Unigraphics NX, FEMAP, ANSYS, etc.)
