Ascend Nonprofit Solutions is seeking a dedicated full-time attorney to join our Education Law Program (ELP). Our mission is to safeguard and promote the legal rights and development of children through individual legal representation, community outreach, and systemic advocacy. The ELP focuses on providing direct legal services while addressing broader systemic challenges that affect the educational rights of students, particularly those with disabilities, those involved with the court system, and those facing exclusionary practices in schools. We are looking for a collaborative team member who is passionate about combating educational disparities.
Key Responsibilities
The attorney will play a vital role within the ELP, reporting directly to the Director. Responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality legal representation to clients in matters related to school discipline, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and other educational issues. Specific tasks may involve:
- Participating in Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 meetings, mediations, and school disciplinary hearings
- Preparing legal documents such as demand letters, due process petitions, and state complaints
- Negotiating with opposing parties to resolve legal issues for clients
- Ensuring compliance with program policies and maintaining accurate records in the agency's case management system
- Conducting training and educational sessions for community partners, professionals, and the public
- Building and sustaining partnerships with community organizations aligned with ELP's mission
- Engaging in community coalitions and task forces as needed
- Applying a race-equity lens in all aspects of work
- Assisting with the agency's fundraising efforts as required
- Carrying out additional duties to support the mission of Ascend Nonprofit Solutions
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills. We encourage applications from individuals who meet most of the criteria:
- J.D. degree from an accredited law school
- Eligibility to practice law in North Carolina or willingness to obtain licensure
- A minimum of 1+ years of experience employing various advocacy strategies
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil rights, and social justice
- In-depth knowledge of education law
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building abilities
- Cultural humility and openness to understanding diverse perspectives
- Commitment to amplifying the voices of youth
- Excellent skills in litigation, legal research, analysis, and document preparation
- Clear and effective oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Proficiency in technology, including MS Office Suite and virtual communication tools
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred
Position Classification
