Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated experience as a first assist in spine surgeries.
  • Primary responsibility includes performing first assist duties during surgical procedures.
  • Confirm surgical cases with the surgeon or facility the evening prior.
  • Engage with patients in the preoperative area, clarifying your role in the surgery, addressing inquiries, and securing necessary documentation and consents.
  • Coordinate with the operating room staff regarding surgeon preferences and assist with patient positioning.
  • Collaborate with all operating room and facility personnel to ensure timely surgery initiation and minimize turnover time.
  • Support the operating surgeon and facility staff with preoperative preferences, including radiographic studies setup, instrumentation preparation, and patient positioning.
  • Deliver high-quality surgical assistance, which entails understanding the surgeon's preferences, operative steps, anticipating needs, problem-solving, and maintaining clear communication throughout the procedure.
  • Assist in patient transition to the stretcher, escort to the PACU, provide handoff to PACU staff, and verify dressings/drains before departure.
  • Maintain meticulous clinical documentation and ensure timely completion.
  • Contribute to clinical and management projects aimed at enhancing team performance, including education, presentations, cross-training, and auditing.
  • Willingness to broaden surgical expertise and learn assistance techniques in various specialties.

Education and Training:

  • Proficient in computer skills, particularly MS Office and EMR systems.
  • Graduation from an accredited Master's Degree program in Physician Assistant Studies or a Master's/Doctoral Degree program in Nurse Practitioner Studies. Nurse Practitioners must hold CNOR or RNFA certification.
  • Possession of a current state license for practice; PAs must have National Commissioned Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • A minimum of one year of surgical experience is required.

Preferred Skills:

Ability to perform all essential duties with or without accommodations, including but not limited to:

  • Experience in assisting with spine surgeries (orthopedic or neuro) and orthopedic procedures.
  • Familiarity with robotic surgical systems.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with adaptability to diverse personalities and needs.
  • Customer service-oriented approach.
  • Capacity to work independently, autonomously, and with confidence.
Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform all essential duties with or without accommodations, including but not limited to:

  • Capability to lift, sit, stand, or squat as needed.
  • Constant engagement in seeing, hearing, and speaking tasks.
  • Frequent lifting of over 20 lbs., along with bending, reaching, standing, walking, and kneeling.
  • Regular preoperative and postoperative patient positioning.
