CLASS TITLE:
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST - CHARTER SCHOOL

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under general supervision, assist a certified educator in overseeing classroom and recreational activities for Charter School students; relieve educators of routine clerical and authorized responsibilities in support of the educational program.

Employees in this role receive general oversight from an assigned administrator and collaborate daily with a certified educator within a clearly defined framework of policies and procedures.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
On a collaborative or individualized basis, support the educator by providing assistance to students both individually and in groups.

Consult with the educator regarding tailored educational goals and objectives.

Engage with faculty, staff, parents, and supervisors to understand the educational aspirations for students.

Develop innovative methods and techniques within the suggested framework of the educator.

May present instructional materials to student groups across various educational areas, in alignment with the educator's instructional plan.


Maintain routine records.

Collect evaluative and observational data and provide constructive feedback to the educator regarding student progress.

May administer and score objective assessments.

May assist with clerical tasks such as typing, duplicating, filing, and attendance tracking.

Support the implementation of school-wide discipline policies.

Provide assistance to the educator by organizing workspaces, displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards; operate audio-visual and educational training equipment; distribute and collect materials and supplies.


Supervise student activities in the classroom, during outdoor events, and on field trips.

Follow directions from the educator concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.

Implement authorized emergency first aid and safety procedures.

Observe and report or rectify unsafe conditions.

May supervise lunch periods.

May perform general cleanup tasks, such as organizing materials and tools.

May operate machinery and equipment related to building trades.

May assist in instructing students on the use of building trades machinery and equipment.

Support individualized academic activities and tutoring, including fine or gross motor skills, visual-perception skills, physical development and fitness, communication, and vocational skills.


Monitor student progress and behavior, conferring with the educator as necessary.

Guide and assist substitute educators when the regular educator is absent.

May assist certified staff with computerized attendance monitoring and/or student grading.

Participate in staff and in-service training meetings.

OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and sentence structure.

Basic functions and procedures specific to the classroom environment, including principles of learning, motivation, and perception.
Basic needs and requirements of students in the assigned area.

Determine steps in a process and manage time efficiently.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Analyze situations accurately and choose an effective course of action.
Direct group activities of students.
Utilize equipment such as typewriters, copy machines, tape recorders, and computers.
Use software applications including attendance and grading systems.
Assist in maintaining student records.
Work effectively with individual students and groups.
Collaborate with others encountered in the course of work.
Engage effectively with students, parents, staff, and the public.
Empathize with the unique needs of the student population.
Comply with safety and grooming standards as required.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Work effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
Contribute to a positive working environment.

May require:
Oral bilingual proficiency in a second language as determined by administration.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:
Graduation from high school and some recent successful experience interacting with youth. Additional specific experience may be required to assist in knowledge and/or skill acquisition.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
Possession of a valid first aid certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate classroom equipment.
Visual acuity to read various materials.
Auditory ability to exchange information in person and via telephone.
Sitting or standing for extended periods.
Bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

May require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects weighing up to 90 lbs., or manipulating/moving weights up to 120 lbs.
