FOR STUDENTS WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under general oversight, this role involves assisting a certified educator in the instruction, training, care, and supervision of students with severe and/or physical disabilities. The position supports the implementation of essential self-help, social, and community skills. The incumbent will perform various tasks both inside and outside the classroom, playing a crucial role in addressing the physical needs of students while also handling clerical responsibilities to support the educational program.

Employees in this position operate under the general supervision of an assigned administrator and collaborate daily with a certified teacher within a structured framework of established policies and procedures.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assist in monitoring students individually or in small groups to facilitate the learning process, adhering to approved methodologies.

Support the educator in delivering instruction to students with significant disabilities.

Contribute to teaching students in areas such as social skills, gross and fine motor development, and self-care abilities.

Reinforce educational content for students with severe disabilities; collaborate with the teacher regarding programs and materials tailored to meet the unique needs of special education students.

Assist students during transportation, ensuring safety by securing and releasing seatbelts, vests, and wheelchairs; provide physical support as necessary.


Operate and maintain various therapeutic, instructional, and office equipment utilized in the classroom.

Support special education students during classroom activities and other events as directed to maintain a safe and productive learning environment.

May involve duties related to mealtime, including preparing the dining area, serving food, assisting students with self-feeding, and promoting proper dining etiquette.

Provide emotional and physical assistance to students, which may include changing clothing and positioning students on specialized equipment; assist with personal hygiene tasks.

Participate in maintaining a clean, orderly, and sanitary classroom environment; disinfect toys, furniture, and equipment.


Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety protocols.

May assist students in mainstream classes according to established guidelines.

Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher; adapt or create resources to enhance the learning experience.

Assist in maintaining Individualized Education Program (IEP) records and files; attend IEP meetings as required; communicate with parents as directed.

Support individual or groups of students in subjects such as reading, language, and mathematics according to the educator's instructions.


Supervise student activities in the classroom, during outdoor events, and on field trips.

Duplicate, assemble, and distribute a variety of instructional and informational materials as assigned.

Perform non-instructional tasks, such as maintaining operational records, attendance logs, lunch counts, and permission slips.


Assist in implementing school-wide discipline policies.

Organize the instructional space; prepare materials for daily activities; maintain a tidy and organized environment.

Support the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, and bulletin boards; operate audio-visual and assistive technology equipment; distribute and collect materials and supplies.


Monitor student progress through observation and record-keeping.

Observe student behavior and progress, conferring with the teacher as necessary.

Guide and assist substitute teachers when the regular educator is absent.

May assist certified staff with attendance tracking and student grading.

Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
