Position Overview

Title: Hockey Coach

Department: Hockey
Reports to: Hockey Manager
Location: Oakland Ice Center
Employment Status: Part-time, Non-exempt
Compensation: $20.00 per hour

Position Summary:
The Hockey Coach is responsible for imparting essential skills for playing ice hockey, ensuring that all participants at the Oakland Ice Center have a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in developing and executing practice plans for the House Recreation Hockey Leagues.
  • Understand and apply USA Hockey guidelines for age-appropriate skill development.
  • Maintain punctuality and reliability for scheduled assignments.
  • Support volunteer coaches in setting up practices, including organizing teaching materials.
  • Ensure practices are engaging, enjoyable, and well-structured to meet participant expectations.
  • Keep skaters actively involved through varied drills and on-ice activities.
  • Provide equitable instruction to all participants.
  • Oversee players and volunteers during practice sessions.
  • Encourage the development of social skills among players.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and players regarding progress and development.
  • Promote additional on-ice sessions, including camps and clinics, to players and parents.
  • Assist players with their equipment as necessary.
  • Encourage new registrations and support returning participants.
  • Stay informed about the latest hockey rules and trends.
  • Promote the Pro Shop offerings.
  • Adhere to all facility rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable about emergency protocols related to equipment and facility evacuation.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success as a player or coach in the sport of hockey.
  • Able to effectively engage with youth and adults, fostering positive relationships.
  • Solid understanding of ice hockey and familiarity with local youth programs and organizations.
  • Ability to endure extended periods of skating and standing while providing instruction.
