This position involves overseeing the coordination of legal services for immigrant residents, acting as the primary liaison for legal service partners, and serving as the City's authority on immigration-related legal and policy matters at various governmental levels.
Key Responsibilities:Legal Coordination:
- Oversee and manage immigration legal services and resources, including consultations, referrals, and advocacy efforts.
- Facilitate legal assistance for additional legal issues affecting immigrant community members, such as family law and workers' rights.
- Establish and nurture partnerships with legal service providers, attorneys, and advocacy organizations.
- Identify collaborative opportunities to enhance legal services for constituents.
- Develop and manage intake processes for legal services.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with immigrant communities and stakeholders to assess their needs and concerns regarding immigration policies.
- Provide direct communication with constituents seeking information about legal processes and follow up as necessary.
- Offer guidance, resources, and referrals to constituents.
- Collaborate with city departments and community partners to disseminate information about available legal services.
Representation and Participation:
- Represent the City in various coalitions and working groups focused on immigration policy and advocacy.
- Facilitate participation in local, regional, and national discussions regarding immigration issues.
Research and Policy Analysis:
- Conduct regular research on laws, policies, and advocacy opportunities impacting the immigrant community.
- Analyze immigration policies to evaluate their effects on the community and recommend local policies that align with the City's objectives.
- Collaborate with public information coordinators to implement information campaigns regarding immigration policies.
Training and Education:
- Provide training sessions on immigration law and policies for city staff and community members.
- Coordinate educational opportunities with partner organizations.
Event Coordination:
- Plan and organize events that facilitate access to legal services and information for immigrants.
Data Management:
- Maintain accurate records related to immigration cases and manage the legal services budget.
Reporting:
- Prepare reports on immigration trends and departmental activities for city leadership.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Law, Public Policy, Political Science, or a related field is required. A Juris Doctor (JD) is preferred.
Experience: At least 4 years of experience in immigration law or policy analysis is required, with a focus on advocacy for immigrant rights.
Language Skills: Proficiency in a second language commonly spoken among immigrant communities is beneficial.
Skills: Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are essential, along with a comprehensive understanding of immigration law.
