Position Title: Server Engineer

Job Overview:

The Server Engineer is responsible for the security, monitoring, and maintenance of a predominantly Microsoft client/server environment. This role involves recommending new hardware, tools, applications, and processes to enhance the existing infrastructure and support future growth. The Server Engineer will also assist with new implementations and take ownership of projects as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and upgrade Windows Server software and related applications.
  • Establish and uphold robust backup and recovery policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement administrative policies and procedures, including security guidelines for subsystems.
  • Implement and maintain database security by creating and managing users and roles, as well as assigning privileges.
  • Optimize business applications through performance tuning and monitoring.
  • Automate processes where feasible using scripting tools.
  • Enhance monitoring and logging functionalities of server applications.
  • Collaborate with application owners to clarify objectives and streamline existing processes.
  • Generate standard distributable reports.
  • Document installation and operational procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in administering MS Active Directory, Exchange, and SQL Server (80% server – 20% O365).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO) using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Knowledgeable in backup, restore, and recovery models.
  • Familiarity with High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for Windows Server.
  • Experience in operational automation utilizing PowerShell scripts.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools such as WhatsUpGold, BackupExec, Langard, and Symantec products.
  • Experience with Windows Server Group Policy.
  • Strong documentation skills for processes and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to work after-hours as needed.
  • Strong problem analysis and resolution capabilities.
  • Effective organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Able to interface with users and customers effectively.
  • Physical capability to lift and move equipment as necessary.
  • Associates Degree in Computer Science or a related field; 5 years of experience may substitute for degree.
  • Certifications such as MCSE, MCITP, or MCSA are a plus.
