Overview of the Role
The Phlebotomy Specialist is responsible for delivering efficient, knowledgeable, and professional blood collection services to all patients, including in-patients, out-patients, and those utilizing contracted services. This role requires a keen awareness of the unique needs associated with different age groups, ensuring a comforting and professional experience for each client. The specialist is also tasked with processing collected specimens in accordance with established integrity guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of patient data entry protocols as per organizational policies. Adhere to Patient Safety Goals as defined by regulatory bodies. Exhibit proficiency in various phlebotomy techniques, including micro puncture, venipuncture, blood bank collections, blood culture collections, and bleeding time assessments. Provide clear explanations of procedures to alleviate patient anxiety and address inquiries within the scope of practice. Monitor and manage Pending Logs, ensuring follow-up on uncollected specimens. Collaborate effectively with team members to complete shift responsibilities. Engage in performance improvement initiatives within the department. Undertake additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required
Education

Completion of a vocational or technical diploma from an accredited institution with a focus on phlebotomy training.

Experience

A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in phlebotomy is preferred. Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from recognized agencies (e.g., ASCP, NPA, APA) is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

Ability to understand and follow the policies and procedures of the healthcare facility. Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English. Demonstrate ethical conduct that aligns with the organization's mission and values, fostering trust and integrity. Provide exceptional customer service while interacting with patients, visitors, and colleagues. Work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. Familiarity with nursing home policies and procedures to provide necessary support. Stay updated on send-out procedures and maintain compliance. Continuously enhance knowledge and skills to ensure competency. Assess situations, evaluate alternatives, and select appropriate actions. Anticipate patient concerns and provide necessary reassurances. Adapt to varying workloads with a positive and cooperative attitude. Suggest improvements to enhance patient service and procedural efficiency. Utilize computer systems as required for the role.
