Overview of the Role
The Phlebotomist is responsible for delivering efficient, knowledgeable, and professional blood collection services to both in-patients and out-patients, while being attentive to the unique age-related needs of each individual. The role demands a polished appearance and the ability to instill confidence in patients through expert application of phlebotomy techniques. Additionally, the Phlebotomist ensures that all collected specimens are processed in accordance with established integrity guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain a thorough understanding of patient data entry protocols in line with organizational policies. Adhere to Patient Safety Goals as defined by regulatory bodies. Exhibit proficiency in various phlebotomy methods, including micro puncture, venipuncture, blood bank collection, blood culture collection, and bleeding time assessment. Familiarize oneself with laboratory reception and assist as needed. Clearly explain procedures to patients to alleviate anxiety and address questions within the scope of practice. Generate and review Pending Logs to ensure follow-up on uncollected specimens. Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient task completion during shifts. Engage in performance improvement initiatives within the department. Carry out additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education

Completion of a vocational or technical diploma from an accredited institution with a focus on phlebotomy training.

Experience

Preferred 1-2 years of experience in phlebotomy. Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from recognized agencies (e.g., ASCP, NPA, APA) is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Skills and Competencies

Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures relevant to the healthcare environment. Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English. Demonstrate ethical conduct that aligns with the organization’s mission and values, fostering trust and integrity. Exhibit professionalism and exceptional customer service when interacting with patients and colleagues. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. Knowledgeable about nursing home policies and able to provide necessary support. Familiar with and compliant with all specimen send-out procedures. Commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement. Capable of assessing situations, evaluating options, and making informed decisions. Anticipate patient concerns and provide suitable reassurances. Adapt to varying workloads with a positive and cooperative attitude. Suggest improvements to enhance procedural efficiency and patient service. Proficient in utilizing computer systems as required by the role.
