Overview of the Role
 The Phlebotomist is responsible for delivering proficient and efficient blood collection services to all patients, including in-patients, out-patients, and contracted service patients, while being mindful of the specific age-related needs of each individual. The role requires maintaining a polished appearance and instilling confidence in patients through expert application of phlebotomy techniques. Collected specimens must be processed in accordance with established integrity guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure a thorough understanding of all patient data entry protocols as per established policies. Adhere to Patient Safety Goals as mandated by regulatory bodies. Demonstrate proficiency in various phlebotomy methods, including micro puncture, venipuncture, blood bank collections, blood culture collections, and bleeding time assessments. Be knowledgeable about laboratory reception and assist in front desk operations as needed. Clearly explain procedures to alleviate patient anxiety and address inquiries within the scope of practice. Generate Pending Logs, monitor, and follow up on uncollected specimens. Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure completion of tasks during shifts. Engage in departmental performance improvement initiatives. Carry out additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
 Education

Completion of a Vocational/Technical Diploma from an accredited institution with a focus on phlebotomy training.

Experience

Preferred 1-2 years of experience in phlebotomy. Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from recognized agencies (e.g., ASCP, NPA, APA) is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

Ability to comprehend and adhere to the policies and procedures of MedStar Health. Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English to fulfill essential job functions.
