Overview of the Role:

Position Summary:
MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated Obstetrical Patient Care Assistant to become part of our esteemed team. In this role, you will:


function as an integral member of the patient-focused care team, delivering direct patient support in the obstetric and maternal-newborn sectors under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or medical professionals.

You will assist nursing and medical personnel with procedures and tests, as well as support patients with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Key responsibilities include performing essential care tasks such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) and Foley Catheter insertions, external fetal monitoring (EFM), and maintaining accurate documentation in the health record.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Deliver direct patient care activities under supervision. Aid patients with ADLs and personal hygiene (e.g., bathing, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion exercises). Assist with patient mobilization and transfers. Collect specimens; perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtain EKGs; and insert intravenous (IV) catheters, change IV sites and dressings, and inspect IV sites; apply oxygen equipment (e.g., nasal cannula and face mask). Measure and document vital signs, height and weight, pulse oximetry, intake and output (I&O), and conduct point of care testing (i.e., finger sticks for glucose monitoring/Accucheck, urine dipstick).
  • Support nursing staff/providers with preparations for examinations and procedures. Act as a scrub assistant during surgical operations (i.e., c-section) and assist in vaginal deliveries. Prepare instruments and supplies, and assist in counting sterile instruments/sets. Clean and maintain specialized equipment such as fetal monitors, infant warmers, and surgical instruments.
  • Ensure the comfort, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient. Conduct patient observation duties, including 1:1 observation. Prepare patients for provider visits and assist in examinations and procedures. Report any actual or potential issues concerning patients/families, including changes in condition/symptoms, to the registered nurse and care team. Participate in CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) as needed.
  • Engage in patient/family education (e.g., proper use of mobility aids) and respond promptly to inquiries from patients, families, and visitors, directing them to appropriate personnel when necessary. Maintain cleanliness and safety in patient rooms by managing linen, removing used meal trays, and checking bed/stretcher siderails and safety restraints. Assist with environmental services support.
  • Transport and/or escort patients during discharges, transfers, and medical appointments. Complete errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory and managing equipment and supplies. Order necessary supplies to maintain inventory levels and ensure the orderly organization of supply and utility rooms.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing assistant certification program.
  • 1-2 years of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant certification in Maryland.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) certification preferred.
  • Experience as a care technician or surgical scrub/technician preferred.
  • General healthcare experience in acute care, long-term care, maternal/newborn settings preferred.
  • Student nurse in junior or senior year preferred.
