ROLE OVERVIEW

J. Shaw Enterprises is seeking a Cost Estimator with substantial construction experience to join their team. This individual will provide logistical insights for project estimates and engage in reconciliation meetings to compare final project costs with initial budgets. The ideal candidate will adeptly navigate all MEP systems and interactions with utility providers, efficiently research unfamiliar information, manage multiple project estimates concurrently, and prioritize tasks based on executive directives. Furthermore, they will handle dispute resolution with clients, suppliers, and contractors, and support project execution teams by reviewing payment applications and change orders. The Cost Estimator will work on a diverse range of construction projects and should possess experience across various project types such as pharmaceuticals, restaurants, service industries, corporate interiors, general renovations, core and shell construction, steel superstructures, reinforced concrete, and high-end fit-outs.

The successful candidate is detail-oriented and driven, skilled at analyzing and organizing project details to deliver results ahead of schedule. The Cost Estimator is receptive to feedback and willing to adjust methods to align with senior leadership's vision. They are a self-starter who takes initiative without requiring detailed oversight and comfortably interacts with clients and subcontractors, embodying the values and goals of J. Shaw Enterprises.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct quantitative and conceptual cost, schedule/phasing, and risk analysis, along with proposal preparation.
  • Review project scope and bid specifications, attend bid meetings, and discuss bid requirements with the management team.
  • Prepare preliminary budgets based on concept discussions or initial design documents.
  • Draft requests for information, detailed construction budgets, schedules, and project cost projections for each elevation.
  • Evaluate purchase offers by assessing changes, additions, and site requirements.
  • Coordinate the distribution of bid documents, obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors by specifying materials, identifying qualified subcontractors, and negotiating prices.
  • Resolve cost discrepancies through information collection and analysis.
  • Prepare special reports by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Identify conflicts between MEP and architectural layouts, generating RFIs.
  • Collaborate with sales teams to prepare estimates, proposals, and bid response packages.
  • Prepare bid leveling documents and present them to the management team and clients.
  • Integrate logistics and delivery timelines that impact project costs.
  • Regularly review and update estimating techniques, tools, and software.
  • Stay informed about trends and techniques in the construction industry, continuously analyzing and discussing factors affecting project costs with sales and construction teams.
  • Attend pre-bid and site meetings to gather sufficient information for accurate estimates.
  • Communicate with clients, engineers, and architects to discuss means and methods, along with cost impacts and financial queries.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of estimated and actual project costs, preparing and presenting reports on cost discrepancies and budget overruns.
  • Facilitate a smooth transition between estimating and the project execution team.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a similar role is required.
  • Applicants must possess excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Project is essential.
  • Experience with ProCore is preferred.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to high professional and ethical standards.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Strong decision-making, analytical, and time management skills are crucial.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Planswift and Bluebeam.
  • Hands-on construction experience is preferred.
  • Estimating experience with raw land, HAZMAT, SOE, excavation, foundations, new construction, and renovation is advantageous.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field, such as construction management or engineering, is a plus.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to successfully pass a pre-employment screen and physical are required.
  • Must be a US citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish) is a plus.
