Job Title: Assistant General Counsel

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant General Counsel to join our team at the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS). As a key member of our legal department, you will play a critical role in providing legal advice and guidance to our agency.

Job Summary:

The Assistant General Counsel will perform advanced professional legal work, including reviewing and drafting administrative rules, analyzing and tracking legislation, and providing legal advice on ethics issues. You will work closely with our General Counsel and other agency employees to ensure compliance with federal and state statutes, constitutional provisions, rules, and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and draft administrative rules and rule amendments
  • Analyze and track legislation relevant to the agency
  • Provide legal advice on ethics issues
  • Interpret and provide legal advice on federal and state statutes, constitutional provisions, rules, and regulations
  • Respond to requests for legal services from various agency divisions
  • Review and respond to domestic relations orders
  • Provide legal advice to the agency's Grievance Review Committee
  • Assist in developing and writing ERS policies and procedures
  • Conduct legal research and prepare correspondence, memos, and other written work
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a juris doctorate degree
  • License to practice law in the State of Texas
  • Active membership with the State Bar of Texas in good standing
  • Four years of experience in the practice of law
  • Four years of experience with legal research and writing
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience related to the Texas legislative process
  • Experience drafting administrative rules
  • Experience as an ethics advisor
  • Experience interpreting state and federal statutes and regulations
