Position Summary
Astound Broadband is seeking a Fiber Splicing Technician for our operations in the peninsula region of Washington. This role is essential for ensuring the quality and prompt delivery of our fiber services to clients. The selected candidate will be responsible for the preparation and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for both indoor and outdoor installations. Responsibilities include conducting fiber panel and splice case audits, as well as executing mid-sheath splices accurately.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and fuse single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for various installations.
- Conduct fiber panel and splice case audits.
- Accurately execute mid-sheath splices.
- Test and troubleshoot fiber using OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier, and scope.
- Install and test fiber cross connects.
- Collaborate with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design teams for splicing tasks.
- Provide detailed reports of field splicing activities to the Fiber Design team.
- Adhere to quality control guidelines and comply with relevant regulations.
- Maintain and secure equipment, ensuring cleanliness and proper stock levels.
- Exhibit a positive attitude and strong work ethic to achieve high productivity with minimal supervision.
- Engage in engineering, permitting, and construction processes.
- Construct splice cases for various cable types and sizes.
- Make informed recommendations for fiber optic cable installations.
- Assist in scheduling splicing jobs with management.
- Support training for Fiber Splicer I-II roles.
- Coordinate with management for necessary maintenance splicing.
- Work with Fiber Design on required parts and equipment.
- Be available for flexible hours and on-call rotations, including nights and weekends.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Maintain a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of splicing experience with proficiency in mid-sheath splicing.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in using construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicers, OTDR, and fiber identifiers.
- Ability to climb poles using appropriate safety gear.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of local and federal regulations and company policies.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Outlook, Excel, Word, and Google Suite.
- Experience with Ribbon fiber preparation and fusion.
- Understanding of safety construction practices.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including nights and weekends.
- Effective communication and interaction skills with team members.
- Capability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Safe driving practices with a valid driver's license and auto insurance.
- Ability to reside within a reasonable commuting distance from the assigned territory.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry and operate an extension ladder (approximately 28 ft high and 75 pounds).
- Capability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
- Vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and at heights.
- Ability to work in environments with dust, noise, and other elements.
