Diagnostic Ultrasound Specialist

As a Diagnostic Ultrasound Specialist, you will play a critical role in our team, utilizing your expertise to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures and provide high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate patient requests for diagnostic ultrasound services and assess patients to determine the appropriate procedure protocol and methods of application.
  • Utilize equipment and accessories, employ techniques and procedures, perform services in accordance with an accepted standard of practice to generate ultrasound images and demonstrate expertise in limiting exposure to patients.
  • Provide patient education in the form of written material and/or verbal explanation prior to, during, and subsequent to the procedure to reduce patient anxiety and enhance their comfort zone with respect to tolerance of the procedure.
  • Act as an agent through observation and communication to obtain pertinent information for the physician to aid in diagnosis and treatment management of the patient.
  • Responsible for setup and sterile tray preparation, including procedure-specific needs, medications, guide wires, catheters, and other ancillary equipment.
  • Responsible for instruction and clinical supervision of students enrolled in an approved ultrasound program.
  • Care for patients throughout the procedure according to department and hospital standards of patient care, age-specific sensitivities, and "patients first" guidelines. Participate in lifting and transporting patients to and from imaging devices.
Additional Functions:
  • Document imaging procedures manually and/or electronically to ensure correct charging and patient and film file tracking.
  • Send acquired images to the PACS system correctly using the appropriate accession numbers for future retrieval by medical staff.
  • Monitor stock of supplies in imaging rooms to assure their regular availability by timely reordering, rotation of dated items, and by maintenance of a clean and orderly environment.
  • Report incidents of equipment failure, irregularities in equipment performance, and equipment in disrepair to the supervisor as soon as possible.
Qualifications:
  • College-based two-year training program with clinical education in an accredited healthcare setting.
  • Technical competency in General Abdominal/Small Parts scanning, Abdominal Doppler, and general Gynecological scanning.
  • Graduation from an accredited program in Ultrasound.
  • ARDMS (OB) certification.
  • CPR Certification (BLS) through the American Heart Association.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical Demands: A physical demands test provides an objective way to identify if a candidate can meet the essential tasks for the job the candidate has applied for at Northwestern Medicine. The testing protocol was established with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
