Job Overview

At NorthBay Health, the Financial Assistance Specialist plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by leveraging information obtained during patient registration, interviews, and interdepartmental consultations. This position is dedicated to identifying payment sources for patients who are uninsured or underinsured, ensuring optimal reimbursement for the hospital and its physicians in a timely manner.

The Financial Assistance Specialist supports patients through the application process for government programs, charity care, or other applicable insurance options. They establish customized payment plans when necessary and engage in educational discussions with patients regarding their coverage eligibility and benefits. This includes providing insights on program eligibility, coordination of benefits, application statuses, estimated financial responsibilities, and outstanding balances from prior visits.

Maintaining a professional and empathetic demeanor is essential, as reflected in courteous interactions, confidentiality, and a polished presentation. The role requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Additionally, the Financial Assistance Specialist collaborates with the QA/Training Coordinator and Exceptional Experience Coaches to facilitate training and enhance departmental quality improvement initiatives. Consistent achievement of departmental goals related to productivity, financial management, and patient satisfaction is expected.

Qualifications

  1. Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED preferred; Associate Degree is a plus.
  2. Licensure/Certification: Relevant certification in Patient Access and/or Revenue Cycle from a recognized healthcare credentialing body is required within 12 months of employment.
  3. Experience:
    1. A minimum of five years in customer engagement roles related to financial counseling, eligibility screening, or collections is required.
    2. Exceptional oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and meaningfully.
    3. Preferred expertise in understanding various insurance types, including Medi-Cal, Medicare, Managed Care, Indemnity, and Workers Compensation, along with their eligibility criteria and benefit coordination.
    4. Understanding the impact of accurate registration/admission processes on successful claims processing and payment receipt.
    5. Recognizing how the registration process affects patient care delivery.
    6. Performance Standards: Adherence to established policies and procedures, demonstrating reliability in attendance and punctuality.

Compensation:

Hourly Pay Range MIN $36.49 (Compensation is based on relevant experience in a similar role).
