Position Overview

This is a full-time role, operating from 8:30 AM to 4:36 PM, Monday through Friday.

The position at this level entails management responsibilities and accountability for delivering professional support services, impacting areas beyond the immediate work environment. The role aims to foster collaboration among staff and the school community to achieve specific goals, particularly in areas such as school administration, operations, or educational initiatives.

While direction on objectives is provided, the role allows for a degree of discretion in determining the methods for achieving these goals. This discretion is generally guided by established procedures and school policies, with any significant deviations requiring consultation with senior management.

At this level, business management responsibilities are integral. A key aspect of the role is managing staff to meet expected outcomes, with most staff management issues resolved independently, although more complex situations may require senior management input. Timely reporting and advice will be provided to senior management, typically concerning immediate work areas, service delivery, or educational programs, without significantly affecting broader school operations.

This position requires a mandatory qualification of no less than four years. Professional support roles, such as therapists and psychologists, are characteristic of this level, where standard professional services are provided. Professional guidance and support will be readily available, and any deviations from established procedures will necessitate direction from senior management.

An education support position assists in delivering educational services to students but does not encompass teaching duties as defined by relevant legislation. Supervision of students is not required unless it is an essential component of the role or involves individual or small group supervision in controlled settings, where the responsibility for students remains with a teacher.

Key Responsibilities

The Student Welfare Officer will play a vital role in enhancing the overall wellbeing and welfare of students under the guidance of the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and the Assistant Principal. The responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with Year Level Teams, the Executive Team, and the Student Wellbeing Team to deliver counselling, support, and therapeutic services to students.
  • Providing counselling and a variety of therapeutic interventions.
  • Being a visible and approachable presence within the school environment, including the wellbeing area, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.
  • Assisting in the coordination and support of new students to ensure a smooth transition into the school.
  • Participating in relevant staff meetings, including Year Level Meetings, Allied Health Team meetings, Care Team meetings, SSG meetings, and Engagement and Wellbeing Meetings.
  • Collaborating closely with families to develop plans, ensure support systems are in place, and follow up as necessary.
  • Providing wellbeing support for the Disability and Inclusion Program, aiding in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), and other relevant plans.
  • Promoting student wellbeing within the school community through various channels such as staff meetings, newsletters, bulletins, noticeboards, and assemblies.
  • Working cooperatively with community service agencies and referring students and families when necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Conducting risk assessments and developing safety plans in collaboration with students, families, and school-based teams.
  • Proactively developing and implementing positive mental health initiatives within the school.
  • Engaging in case management, consulting with various stakeholders involved with students and their families.
  • Designing and leading evidence-based programs and groups that help students develop resilience and resourcefulness both in school and beyond.
  • Supporting placement students within the school wellbeing team.
  • Performing other duties as directed by the Executive Team and Student Wellbeing Coordinator.
