Position Overview
The Certified Sleep Study Specialist is responsible for conducting polysomnography and providing diagnostic and therapeutic services, including Home Sleep Apnea Testing, while delivering patient care and education. This role operates under the guidance of the Clinical Manager and Medical Directors to ensure comprehensive assessment and management of sleep disorders. The Specialist may also mentor PSG Trainees and Technicians across various age groups and settings. Travel to different sleep lab locations may be required based on departmental needs to fulfill patient care responsibilities and other assigned tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately score sleep studies for both adult and pediatric patients.
- Conduct various testing procedures including PSG, titration studies, MSLT, MWT, PAP Nap, HSAT, and other sleep-related assessments, while adhering to UHC Sleep Center protocols.
- Identify and rectify equipment malfunctions.
- Collaborate with Sleep Center personnel and interdisciplinary team members to foster a cohesive work environment and contribute to the operational objectives of the assigned area.
- Educate patients and their families, providing care that is appropriate for all age groups, from infants to the elderly.
- Take ownership of professional standards, engage in self-development, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate knowledge of proper PPE usage.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Adhere to all organizational policies and standards.
- Refer to departmental documentation for specific duties and responsibilities during orientation.
- Ensure the secure handling of Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with annual training, the UH Code of Conduct, and relevant policies and procedures.
Education
- Nationally credentialed in a relevant health-related field (respiratory care, electroneurodiagnostics, or EMT-P) is required, or
- A four-year degree and Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (or equivalent) with documented proficiency in all competencies required of a Technologist at UHC, along with a minimum of 24 months of direct sleep patient care experience is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of direct experience in sleep patient care is required.
- In-depth knowledge of scoring requirements in accordance with AASM Standards is required.
- Understanding of scope of practice and a thorough grasp of patient monitoring and care delivery is essential, along with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to utilize a variety of technical equipment to meet patient needs and prescribed medical therapies is required.
- Comprehension of sleep-induced physiological changes across various body systems is necessary.
- Working knowledge of physiological and behavioral anomalies associated with sleep/arousal disorders, with the capability to rapidly interpret various tracings to intervene during studies is required.
- Certification from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (or equivalent) is required.
- Frequent standing and walking.
- Occasional sitting.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional climbing and balancing.
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
- Constantly required to handle, grasp, feel, talk, and hear.
- Constant eye/hand/foot coordination is necessary.
