Role Overview

The Line Maintenance Manager & Field Engineering plays a vital role in Viasat's Commercial Airline and Business Aviation Support team. This position is essential for delivering and sustaining Viasat's premier "In-Flight Connectivity (IFC)" services for our airline and aviation clients. The individual in this role will be instrumental in the successful launch of services for new clients and in maintaining the existing systems of our IFC solutions. Compliance with Viasat procedures and adherence to FAA and local regulations is paramount.

Viasat operates a unique line maintenance setup with a small, dedicated team across multiple stations, supported by broader Quality and Field Engineering teams. We are in search of a versatile individual who can think creatively to ensure regulatory compliance while managing a team that works varied hours throughout the week. The ideal candidate will identify efficiencies and maintain cost-effectiveness as we expand our customer fleet. A hands-on approach is essential, as the role may require direct involvement in aircraft dispatches when necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise certified technicians and supervisors conducting scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on IFEC systems across multiple line maintenance stations and vendors.
  • Oversee Field Engineers working on commercial and business aircraft who may not be qualified under the Part 145 roster.
  • Lead the team in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving discrepancies related to aircraft in accordance with approved technical data.
  • Ensure thorough documentation and records of all maintenance and field engineering activities on customer aircraft, complying with airline partner and FAA regulations.
  • Evaluate the performance of each station to ensure work is completed as scheduled.
  • Assume multiple roles typical of a line maintenance organization, including quality assurance, inventory management, and tooling to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Manage facilities, vehicles, documentation, and tooling for current line maintenance stations and future growth.
  • Monitor timecards and line maintenance schedules to maximize productivity in a cost-effective manner.
  • Act as the accountable manager for our FAA Part 145 certificate, maintaining a strong relationship with our FAA Inspector/FSDO.
  • Analyze system reliability and recommend actions based on findings.
  • Travel to customer maintenance locations on short notice to support operations.
  • Respond promptly to customer inquiries and escalations.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to OSHA & FAA standards.
  • Develop and maintain operational KPIs, presenting status reports to stakeholders.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Aviation Support.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation, Electrical Engineering, IT, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of technical field engineering, line maintenance, or customer support experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Familiarity with Part 121 and Part 145 aviation maintenance manuals, maintenance programs, and FAA regulations.
  • Strong understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and related manuals.
  • Proven track record in establishing and managing line maintenance stations.
  • Experience as an FAA Accountable Manager, capable of assuming this role for our Part 145 Line Maintenance certificate.
  • Possession of a FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certificate.
  • Ability to direct staff on a flexible schedule in a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer applications.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time.
  • Valid Passport for international travel.
  • Ability to obtain AOA airport badges.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Linux/Unix systems.
  • Background in networking environments, particularly TCP/IP.
  • Experience interfacing with Business Aviation and/or Airline customers.
  • Familiarity with RF Satellite or Wireless Communication systems.
  • Knowledge of AS9100d specifications for documentation and compliance.
  • Located near Viasat offices to enable hybrid working, though highly qualified remote candidates in the contiguous United States may be considered.
Compensation

$127,000 - $229,200.00 annually. Compensation at Viasat is based on various factors, including the role's scope and the candidate's experience. Additional incentives may be included as part of the compensation package, along with a comprehensive range of benefits focused on health and wellness.
