Compensation Range: $35.35 per hour

Role Responsibilities

The Phlebotomy Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing blood collection through venipuncture and capillary methods on patients across all age demographics. Depending on the work environment, duties may include in-house phlebotomy, processing samples, or performing registration and blood collection in patient service centers. Effective communication with laboratory staff, clients, physicians, and patients is essential.

Key Duties
  1. Conducts venipuncture and capillary blood sample collections, ensuring accurate identification and labeling of specimens in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
  2. Utilizes laboratory information systems or web-based applications to resolve complex issues independently while maintaining a sensitive and caring approach.
  3. Processes specimens following laboratory protocols, including proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
  4. Collects necessary insurance and financial information for accurate billing, demonstrating knowledge of ABN collection requirements and MSPQ completion.
  5. Accurately inputs orders and patient demographic data into the laboratory information system.
  6. Handles incoming calls with precision, efficiency, and courtesy, employing best practices in customer service.
  7. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, or relevant coursework towards obtaining the required WA State Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) Certification.
  • Certification from an accredited phlebotomy training program, including successful completion of an internship, or relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Current State of Washington Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification or equivalent.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

Preferred:
  • Three years of experience in a clinical laboratory customer service or specimen processing role.
  • Prior training and proficiency in addressing the unique needs of various customer service situations involving clinicians and their office staff.
  • Familiarity with government regulations, particularly Medicare and Washington state medical Test Site regulations, as well as knowledge of College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria.
  • PBT(ASCP) certification.
