The Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department is actively seeking applications from qualified lateral police officer candidates. A lateral police officer is someone currently employed with a POST-recognized law enforcement agency or has been employed with such an agency as a peace officer with a break in service not exceeding three (3) years. Candidates with a break in service exceeding three (3) years must complete a POST Re-qualification course prior to application.

Key Responsibilities

The Lateral Police Officer role encompasses a variety of peace officer duties aimed at safeguarding life and property, enforcing laws and regulations, conducting criminal investigations, and engaging in crime prevention and suppression efforts. In addition to general patrol duties, officers may be assigned to specialized roles such as investigations, traffic enforcement, juvenile services, personnel training, or tactical teams. Officers are expected to be available for shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays. A probationary period of 18 months applies.

This position is represented by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Officers Association.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The Police Department seeks a well-qualified lateral police officer who is a dynamic, community-focused team player, eager to find innovative approaches to policing and dedicated to delivering outstanding customer service with integrity and respect.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Lateral applicants must hold a California POST Basic Certificate and have successfully completed a POST-approved field training program.
  • Currently employed in a lateral role with a California State Police Agency. Lateral applicants not currently employed must have worked for a California police department within the last three years or have completed the POST recertification course prior to employment.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with 60 units of college credit from an accredited institution.
  • Must not be on probation.
  • The most recent performance evaluation must reflect an overall rating of competent or above; the employee must not be on a special evaluation status at the time of appointment.
  • A completed college degree is highly desirable and will be favorably considered in the selection process.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record (ongoing requirement).
  • Must be free of any felony convictions.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Employees must maintain the physical condition necessary for extended periods of sitting, walking, and standing; engage in activities such as stooping, crawling, crouching, and climbing; maintain focus and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure; and possess effective audio/visual discrimination and perception for successful task completion. Activities include:
  • Pursuing fleeing suspects on foot; subduing resisting or attacking individuals using control techniques.
  • Physically lifting, dragging, or carrying difficult-to-move objects or individuals; climbing over obstacles; balancing on uneven surfaces; crawling in confined spaces; and jumping down from elevated areas.
  • Using body force to gain access through barriers.
  • Maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Walking for long durations (e.g., foot patrol).
  • Supporting heavy objects (e.g., equipment, injured individuals).
  • Reaching overhead to retrieve items.
  • Squatting, crouching, or kneeling for searches or evidence collection.
  • Bending or stooping for searches or evidence collection.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders.
