Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Benefits Specialist to join our team at Selfhelp Community Services. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for assessing, applying for, and ensuring clients receive the maximum allowable benefits.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, at least 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience, and excellent verbal and written skills. You will also possess excellent customer service skills, be able to multitask, and work independently with great attention to detail.

The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $45,000 per annum, commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contact all income sources for new clients (e.g., social security, pensions, SSI, VA) and submit applications necessary to collect income.
  • Follow up on collections and resolve collection problems.
  • Obtain copies of marriage certificates, death certificates, or any other documentation required for benefits.
  • Prepare and coordinate applications for entitlements, such as Medicaid and Home Care benefits, Food Stamps, SSI, and HEAP.
  • Ensure all activity done on behalf of clients is recorded in the appropriate client files.
Working Conditions/Physical Demand
  • Business office environment with phone and computer use.
  • Ability to attend meetings and training outside of office environment.
  • Ability to travel to in-the-field locations.
