Position Overview

The Patient Support Specialist will assist individuals in completing Medical Assistance Applications for those who may qualify for benefits under the Medical Assistance Program or other entitlement initiatives. This role involves gathering all essential documentation required by the County Assistance Office to assess eligibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the completion of Medical Assistance Applications, evaluate for disability, and assist in filling out the hospital charity care form with the patient or their representative.
  • Maintain daily updates in the computer system.
  • Ensure daily completion of Medical Assistance production reports.
  • Deliver 1663 forms to the designated physician within 24 hours post-application completion.
  • Collect all necessary releases, waivers, and questionnaires.
  • Provide each patient with a checklist of pending documents and conduct daily follow-ups while the patient is still receiving care.
  • Fax all required verifications within the first 24-48 hours after the MA application is submitted.
  • Prepare applications for submission to the County Assistance Office.
  • Immediately address discharge files.
  • Follow up with the County Assistance Office until a determination is reached.
  • Assist with Marketplace applications where applicable.
  • Report any non-compliance or concerning behavior from patients to management.
  • Handle patients' protected health information (PHI) in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.

Qualifications

  • Onsite work at client locations is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • A college degree in a healthcare-related field is preferred.
  • 2 to 3 years of experience in the healthcare sector is necessary.
  • Experience interacting with patients for 2 to 3 years is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to engage effectively with patients.
  • Ability to work independently with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent investigatory and research capabilities.
  • Proficient in utilizing the internet and learning new databases.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • High organizational skills are essential.
  • Adherence to client policies and protocols while maintaining professionalism.
  • Ability to achieve monthly productivity targets.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook is required.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (both spoken and written) is an advantage.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: The role requires mobility within the work area, light lifting, sitting, performing manual tasks, and operating office equipment such as computers and telephones.
  • Mental Demands: The employee must be capable of following instructions, collaborating with colleagues, and managing stress effectively.
  • Work Environment: The noise level in the workplace is generally low.
